Compass to help you Know Your Food

Leading foodservice provider Compass Group UK & Ireland has launched a new programme to drive consumer education around its health, wellbeing and sustainable sourcing activities called Know Your Food.

In line with Compass' Responsibility Deal pledges to Government, Know Your Food will be embedded across the business as a common platform to inform consumers about healthy living and sustainable sourcing and deliver core initiatives to clients and stakeholders.

Branded Know Your Food materials have already been developed and as GDA labelling is rolled out across the business, Compass is also introducing eye-catching and informative Know Your Food boards to be displayed at its sites, in line with the varying needs of its sector businesses.

Featuring permanent information about GDA labelling and maintaining a balanced diet, as well as regular updates on Compass' sustainable and ethical sourcing initiatives and commitments, these boards will explain what's in the food that Compass' millions of daily customers consume. Around 300 Know Your Food boards are already on display with thousands more planned.

Monthly Know Your Food packs will be provided to Compass teams at all appropriate sites which will include educational leaflets around key topics such as the importance of hydration and salt reduction, linked where possible to key events such as Salt Awareness Week. Monthly seasonal produce flyers and posters endorsed by Eat Seasonably will also be included. These will feature a seasonal produce hero along with ideas about how to cook these great ingredients and even handy tips on how to grow your own produce at home.

Central to the creation of Know Your Food is the need for Compass to have one clear programme through which we can drive and communicate all of our health, wellbeing and sustainable sourcing activities and commitments. Such commitments are at the very core of our business so it is vital that we have the right tools to engage our various audiences, both internally and externally, and I believe Know Your Food will do just that.

As part of the programme, Compass will continue to roll-out whole+sum, its innovative mix and match food concept offering meals under 500 calories. Clear, consistent messages around this, and future initiatives, will be communicated to clients and customers under the Know Your Food identity.

In March, Compass was the only contract caterer to commit to the Government's calorie reduction Responsibility Deal pledge, promising to reformulate over 5000 of its standard recipes, reducing the calorie content in these dishes by up to 10%. As part of the pledge, Compass also committed to provide consumers with a wide range of healthier choices and more information about health and nutrition.

Compass has introduced a number of innovative health and wellbeing initiatives this year and is well on track to meet the pledges it has made as part of the Responsibility Deal. 1% milk has become the standard milk provided to customers across thousands of Compass sites, almost eight tonnes of salt has been sifted out of the business by a reduction in the size of Compass' salt sachets and all artificial trans fats have been removed from the food it serves. In addition, Compass is working with its suppliers to ensure it meets the salt reduction targets set, and is continuing to roll-out GDA labelling across all of its sectors.
