Compass Chefs donate time to deliver festive lunch to military community in Southend

Last week two of Compass UK & Ireland chefs partnered with SSAFA, the armed forces charity, and donated their time to spread holiday cheer by cooking up a festive mouth-watering Christmas lunch with all the trimmings, for over 70 members of the SSAFA Southend Veteran’s Lunch Club.

Started in January 2016 by Michele Everett, Divisional Secretary of Southend and Rochford SSAFA, the SSAFA Southend Veterans’ Club meets every week. The club which is solely funded by donations, offers local veterans from the Armed Forces community, the opportunity to meet for social companionship and comfort, with their annual Christmas lunch epitomising this being comprised of laughter, fun and good will.

Mick Hickman, Foodservice Director, Compass Group UK & Ireland, Chairman of the Armed Forces Covenant said: “Christmas lunch is an important social event allowing these veterans the opportunity to come together as a community. By giving the time of two of our chefs and providing the ingredients, we are proud to have played our part in putting on a wonderful event that has brought happiness and good will to these inspiring veterans during this festive period.”

James Grant, Head of Corporate & Events at SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity commented: “SSAFA is proud to be working with Compass Group UK & Ireland as an official charity partner. We are working with the team to make this a meaningful and productive venture, building on previously successful fundraising events.”

Claire Bassett, SSAFA added “Days like these serve to remind me that what I do is help real people. The laughter in the room was infectious, and I’m so grateful to everyone who gave up their time to make the day happen.”
