Compass colleagues from the Within Network talk to us about Black History Month
In honour of Black History Month, our Within network at Compass Group UK & Ireland, is leading a month of activity to inspire and educate.
The Within network is our colleague community that embraces and promotes cultural diversity. Through the network, members have the opportunity to connect with others from different cultures and religions, share experiences and learn from one another.
Along with a special event on 13th October, the network has developed a toolkit to bring this year’s theme of ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’ into the workplace. The aim of the toolkit is to spark conversations, recognise contributions, and create experiences where both colleagues and guests feel connected to the richness of Black history and culture.
Black History Month is a time to honour heritage, celebrate excellence and acknowledge the lasting contributions of Black communities to our shared culture. This year’s theme invites us to reflect on strength, resilience and the joy of identity.
We asked some of our Within network colleagues why celebrating Black History Month is important to them
Claire Duesbury, Diversity & Inclusion Lead, Levy and Within Network Co-Chair:
“The theme this year is both poignant and timely and one that means a great deal to me personally. For me, ‘standing firm in power and pride’ means remaining secure in who we are, in what we believe and how we conduct ourselves in our places of employment and also outside of the workplace. We must continue to take pride in our rich cultural heritage and not shrink ourselves to fit in but embrace our authentic selves.”
Jeni Morris, Head of Premium Operations, Levy:
“Seeing diversity in leadership is empowering; it sends a clear message that success is possible for everyone. When I see someone who looks like me or shares a similar background succeed in a leadership role, it inspires confidence and reinforces the belief that I can achieve the same. For guests, diverse leadership and talent create a more welcoming and inclusive environment. It reflects a broader range of perspectives and experiences, which enhances service quality and ensures that everyone feels seen, respected and valued during their visit.”
Opeoluwa Olaleye, Graduate Operations Trainee, Restaurant Associates:
“True power and pride live in the everyday moments - being confident in who you are, standing strong in your values and embracing your identity even when it sets you apart. It’s about community, lifting each other up and finding strength through collaboration.”
Joseph Charles, Patient Experience Manager, Medirest Healthcare:
“‘Standing Firm in Power & Pride’ reflects my commitment to authenticity and purpose in every space I enter. Staying grounded, understanding my heritage and the strength of those who came before me, I aspire to honour their resilience through advocacy for equity, mentorship and leadership rooted in integrity. I hold myself to a standard of excellence and impact, carrying pride in my work that elevates both my role and those around me - and being comfortable enough to crack a joke or two along the way.”
Tamanda Godwin, Catering Manager, ESS Defence:
“Building the future for the next generation of Black leaders in hospitality is about visibility, support and opportunity. When young people see leaders who look like them thriving in the industry, it gives them confidence and pride in what is possible. Mentorship plays a part. Experienced leaders can guide and challenge emerging talent, helping them navigate careers and develop their skills. It is crucial to create inclusive environments where diverse voices are heard and celebrated and achievements recognised.”
Dennis Oware-Simpey, General Manager, Restaurant Associates & Within Network Co-Chair:
“Reading all of the spotlight case studies within our toolkit makes me proud! I hope it will make more people aware of the barriers we still face in today’s society, but also make them appreciate the resilience it takes to continue striving and make them more supportive going forward.”
