Compass scoops Health & Vitality Honours

News

ESS Support Services Worldwide and Chartwells, both part of Compass Group UK & Ireland, and Mick Hickman MBE, ESS and Chartwells Foodservice and Marketing Director, have been acknowledged at the prestigious Health & Vitality Honours awards ceremony, held at Lords Cricket Ground, London.

The event, held on 26th January 2017, recognised excellence from companies and individuals in the foodservice supply chain, which have implemented healthy living programmes and promoted awareness amongst consumers.

Mick Hickman received the Special Achievement Honours for his work creating industry leading health and wellbeing initiatives at Compass Group UK & Ireland, the UK’s largest food and support services firm. In 2011 Compass committed to a series of pledges under the food network pillar of the Responsibility Deal and Mick became the ambassador for ensuring that the business delivered on its promises. He went on to drive these commitments further, launching the business’ 2020 Health strategy, which saw a string of industry leading health commitments in areas such as reducing calories and educating consumers.

ESS earned the Public Sector Health & Vitality Honours for its work developing ‘Thrive’, a tailored food and nutritional education programme to meet the Ministry of Defence’s requirements in line with the Armed Forces nutritional regulations. ESS has worked to ensure military personnel have access to healthy, balanced and nutritious food to meet the varied and individual needs across the organisation, but importantly have partnered this with bespoke education around health and fitness.

Mick Hickman, Foodservice Director for ESS and Chartwells commented: "To win the Special Achievement Honours at the Health & Vitality Honours is a really fantastic moment in my career and means a great deal to me. The Public Sector Health & Vitality Honours being awarded to ESS shows what a successful programme we have implemented in collaboration with our client. Our teams have worked side by side to create a tailored solution, specifically designed to meet the needs of our hard-working military and it's great that their efforts have been recognised."

Chartwells, Compass Group UK & Ireland’s specialist provider of catering to the education sector, was the runner up for the Health & Vitality in Education Honours, for its sugar reduction programme with West Sussex County Council. Chartwells worked with its client to reduce the amount of sugar intake per school child by an average of 1.54 kilos per year, and in 24 months has almost halved the sugar content in its menus for West Sussex school children.

Chris Garside, Managing Director ESS and Chartwells said: “These acknowledgments at the Health & Vitality Honours, highlight the great work we’re doing in the area of health and wellbeing. Our team of experts, led by Mick, really are leading the way to provide healthier meals and education to our clients and consumers. Congratulations to Mick and our ESS and Chartwells teams for the brilliant work they have done and continue to do.”
